The Mind-Boggling Bullshit of Health and Fitness

If there’s an industry plagued with profuse amounts of bullshit, it’s health and fitness. Know what it is so you can avoid it and spend your time doing what actually works. While there’s more bullshit than I can list here, these are some of the most common culprits. (Would you rather have the audio version of this article? Download it fromiTunes.) The Expert A trainer at your gym says you need to drink special pre- and post-workout concoctions if you want to get results and, you’re in luck, because he just so happens to sell them. It’ll only cost you $100+ per month, but it’ll totally be worth it because you’re gonna look fantastic. Ahh, the stench of bullshit is hanging in the air. Detoxes and Cleanses Someone tells you to jump-start your regimen with a detox or cleansebecause they’re just the best thing ever and who cares if you feel... Read more »

  • 4 Tips to Feel Great With Strength Training

4 Tips to Feel Great With Strength Training

If your strength training workouts don’t make you feel great or, worse, leave you feeling achy or beat up, then you need to change things. Now. Here’s how. Below you’ll find four tips I use with clients (and myself) who complained that lifting weights didn’t “feel good” or left them feeling achy. Whether you’re an older lifter and want to strength train as safely as possible, you have previous aches and pains you want to alleviate, or you want your workouts to make you feel better and have more energy, give these four tips a try during your next workout. Tip 1: Slow down your reps.* This tip is simple to practice but also very effective, especially if you’ve previously experienced discomfort or pain from strength training workouts. Give this a try during your next workout (or even test it now with a set of push-ups) to experience it for yourself. Slow... Read more »

Lack of Fitness Nearly as Deadly as Smoking, Study Says

Analyzing nearly 800 men starting at midlife, Swedish scientists also found that each measurable increase in fitness levels translated into a 21 percent lower risk of death over 45 years of follow-up. “Fitness in middle age is of importance for mortality risk for several decades,” said study author Per Ladenvall, a researcher in the department of molecular and clinical medicine at University of Gothenburg. “Persons with low fitness are associated with an increased mortality risk throughout life.” “Smoking was the risk factor that was [most strongly] associated with mortality,” Ladenvall added. “We were somewhat surprised that the effect of aerobic capacity was even more pronounced than that of high cholesterol and high blood pressure.” Heart problems caused by narrowed heart arteries, also known as ischemic heart disease, is the most common cause of death worldwide, according to the World Health Organization. Using exercise testing, which is traditionally used to diagnose ischemic... Read more »

Sit All Day? An Hour of Exercise Can Cancel Out the Health Risks

Sitting for eight hours a day doesn’t seem to raise your risk for dying early, according to a new analysis of previous studies—but only if you get at least an hour of exercise daily. The results, published this week in the Lancet, may be reassuring for people stuck behind a desk all day, say health experts, but it should also serve as an important reminder: If you have to sit for long periods, your daily workout is vital to your well-being. The connection between sitting and dying has been studied extensively, and has inspired many scary headlines in the media. And while this research didn’t actually look at any new data, it did combine information from 16 previous studies in a way than hadn’t been done before. Using this data, researchers were able to directly compare death rates over a certain period of time between people with different levels of sitting... Read more »

Strength-Training Frequency: How Does It Impact Strength Gains?

So, you want to get stronger. That’s a good thing. Strong muscles help you avoid many of the pitfalls of aging, like frailty, and it makes you more self-sufficient. Who doesn’t enjoy the thrill of moving a heavy piece of furniture without help? You also might wonder how often you need to strength train to maximize your gains. Can you build significant muscle strength with once a week training or would four times a week lead to the greater strength gains? Exercise frequency is one of the training variables you can “tweak” to get better results or to bust out of a plateau. Strength Training Frequency and Exercise Frequency While you might think MORE strength training sessions are better, research doesn’t support this idea. In fact, research shows that you don’t even have to train three times a week like most people do to be strong. Let’s look at a few... Read more »

  • How to Run a Half-Marathon

    How to Run a Half-Marathon

You know how they say, “third time’s a charm”? That proved to be unbelievably true when it came to my half-marathon recovery. It went like this: first race, figuring it out; second race, totally blew it; third race, BINGO. Very much like Goldilocks, it took a little trial-and-error, including totally destroying my body on round two. But I learned from my failures, and I’m here to help you not make my mistakes. Here’s how you recover from a half-marathon to prevent that crippling, I-got-hit-by-a-truck soreness for three days after running the 13.1 miles. Eat a banana: This is my go-to. After races one and three, I inhaled a banana (and a chocolate milk, but I don’t know if I can recommend that). Race two? No banana. I obviously don’t attribute the entirety of my recovery success to the banana (that’s one glorified fruit), but I think it definitely helped with muscle... Read more »
