Usually after a workout hiatus, I am more than ready to hit the gym, get sweaty and return to my normal routine. But this time was different. The harsh realities of life had left me not only weak in body, but also in spirit — and the last thing I wanted to do was bust out a set of squats. I turned toward yoga, not with any physical objective, but to simply regain my piece of mind. My first few ventures on the mat were half-hearted; I truly didn’t care if I regained my lost muscle or former level of fitness. I performed the posture for the sake of the posture and nothing else. I found that not having a goal was liberating; after weeks of being sedentary, it felt good just to move and breathe. I started to look forward to the next session, not as a workout, but as... Recent studies have indicated that vigorous aerobic exercise can improve memory and reasoning in people with mild cognitive impairment, which is often a precursor to dementia. A team of Australian researchers has been studying whether resistance training has a similar effect. The team recruited 68 women and 32 men ages 55 through 86, all of whom had mild cognitive impairment, and randomly assigned them to two groups. One group did weight training twice a week for six months, lifting 80% of the maximum amount they could. The other did stretching exercises. All participants were given cognitive tests at the beginning and end of the study and 12 months after they finished the study. The group that did the weight training scored significantly higher at the end of the study than at the beginning and retained that gain at 12 months. The gain in test scores was also greatest for those who... Read more »
Those popular fitness trackers you wear on your wrist estimate your heart rate with a sensor that measures changes in blood flow through your skin. But just how accurate are they? To find out, researchers tested four popular commercial wrist-worn monitors on 50 young, healthy adults. Participants were hooked up to an ECG machine, which records the heart’s electrical activity and provides the “gold standard” measure of heart rate. They were also randomly assigned to wear two different wrist monitors as they walked or ran on a treadmill at speeds ranging from 2 to 6 mph. Heart rate readouts were recorded at rest, during each speed, and after the treadmill test. Two of the devices, the Apple Watch and the Mio Fuse, were accurate about 91% of the time. The other two, the Fitbit Charge HR and the Basis Peak, were accurate about 84% and 83% of the time, respectively, the... Read more »

“How is yoga meaningful beyond its poses? How can we practice yoga beyond the physical experience?” asks yoga teacher and blogger Rebecca Pacheco in her book, Do Your Om Thing: Bending Yoga Tradition to Fit Your Modern Life ($17; amazon.com). “What do we need to know to get the most out of our yoga, and by extension, our lives?” In this excerpt, she explains the yogic approach to happiness, and how to make it work for you. I’m not sure who said, “Happiness is an inside job,” but it’s a great thing to remember as a yogi. According to yoga philosophy, santosha, which means contentment, is a form of self-discipline. Sticking to an exercise plan isn’t always easy. Sometimes you feel like curling up on the couch with a cup of tea and a snack rather than pumping iron or doing an HIIT workout. Exercise motivation is a problem for many people as evidenced by the fact that less than 25% of people meet the recommended guidelines for physical activity. People use a number of ways to work up the motivation to exercise. You can think about the many benefits that exercise has to offer – better cardiovascular health, greater strength, better physique, and a lower risk of some chronic diseases, to name a few. You can also use “self-talk” and inspiring fitness quotes for motivation.
